- Cultivating Virginia's Farm to School Program
- Description:
- 9:30 am – 3:30 pm.
Virginia Cooperative Extension invites you to a one-day conference, Cultivating Virginia’s Farm to School Program: A Conference for Farmers, School Nutrition Directors and Interested Citizens, exploring farm to school for Virginia's farmers, school systems and youth. The conference will take place at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business (100 Darden Blvd., Charlottesville 22903) on Wednesday December 10 from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM.
Farm to school brings healthy food from local farms to school children nationwide. These programs connect schools with local farms to serve healthy meals in school cafeterias, provide health and nutrition education opportunities that will last a lifetime, and support local small farmers.
The specific purpose of this educational conference is to 1) learn how farm to school is coordinated across the United States, 2) provide a review of Task Force findings and current local efforts, 3) learn about potential model farm to school programs for Virginia, and 4) explore how Virginia can link its schools, farming and food systems together to improve the economic viability of agriculture and health and nutrition of Virginia’s youth. This conference will feature top presenters to discuss and explore the issues that surround the further development of farm to school programs in Virginia.
The conference program opens with a welcome by Governor Tim Kaine, and offers presentations and panels on farm-to-school from the perspectives of producers, public schools, and national and state advocates. Presenters include Anthony Flaccavento of Appalachian Sustainable Development, VABF member Charlie Maloney of Dayspring Farm, Emily Jackson of the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project, Leanne Dubois of Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) and many more.
The conference is hosted by Virginia Cooperative Extension and co-sponsored by VDACS, Jefferson Area Board for Aging, Virginia Foundation for Agricultural Innovation and Rural Sustainability, Virginia Dietetic Association, Environmental Defense Fund and the Mid-Atlantic region of the National Farm to School Network. The conference is coordinated by Matt Benson, Jonah Fogel and Eric Bendfeldt, Extension Specialists in Community Viability.
The National Farm to School Network is a collaborative program of eight regional lead agencies and national staff which provide free training and technical assistance, information services, networking, and support for policy, media and marketing activities. The Network is supported in part by a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

- Event Title:
- 10th Annual Virginia Biological Farming Conference
- Description:
- View the full color Biological Farming Conference flyer here.
The Virginia Biological Farming Conference began in 2000
at Camp Blue Ridge in Montebello up in Nelson County.
This conference is an offspring of an earlier program called
the Virginia Sustainable Agriculture Conference which was
held from 1985 to 1997. All of these conferences have been
co-sponsored by Virginia Cooperative Extension and by the
Virginia Association for Biological Farming. All of these
conferences have promoted ecological agriculture.
Perennial concepts which are always promoted at the Virginia
Biological Farming Conference include natural pest
controls, the use of cover crops, crop rotation, ecological
livestock production, specialty crops, Community Supported
Agriculture, careful soil management, direct marketing,
compost, mulch, careful management of animal manures,
family labor, on-farm research and careful financial
management. Practices and products which are never promoted
at the Virginia Biological Farming Conference include
the use of synthetic chemical pesticides, herbicides,
petroleum-based fertilizers, growth hormones, antibiotics,
genetically modified organisms, irradiation and sewage
sludge.
The theme of the Tenth Annual Virginia Biological Farming
Conference is Community Based Foods Systems. We
are very fortunate to have Will Allen with Growing Power
Inc. from Milwaukee and Chicago serving as our keynote
speaker.
Growing Power, Inc. transforms communities by supporting
people from diverse backgrounds and the environments in
which they live through the development of Community
Food Systems. These systems provide high-quality, safe,
healthy, affordable food for all residents in the community.
Growing Power develops Community Food Centers, as a
key component of Community Food Systems, through training,
active demonstration, outreach, and technical assistance.
They have urban farms in Milwaukee, Wisconsin,
and in Chicago, Illinois. Food production occurs in the
organization's demonstration greenhouses, rural farm site in
Merton, and urban farms in Milwaukee and Chicago. They
also distribute produce, grass-based meats, and value-added
products through the activities of over 300 small family
farmers in the Rainbow Farmers Cooperative, and the organization's
year-round food security program the Farm-to-
City Market Basket Program.
Other conference speakers will discuss the use of parasitic
nematodes for natural pest control, ecological livestock
raising, greenhouse production of naturally-grown vegetables,
small-scale production of small fruit, managing family
and farming, sheep and goats, permaculture, ecological
weed management, selling at farmers’ markets, agriculture
economics, vermi-composting, marketing organic produce
to restaurants, farmscaping for biological insect control,
grass-fed beef, gourmet and medicinal mushrooms, certification
programs and building healthy communities.
As always we will have a lively youth program, an awesome
trade show and plenty of opportunities for networking
with ecological farmers from Virginia and other states.
